PRESS CONFERENCE ON TEXAS A&M CENSORSHIP AND RETALIATION :: January 22, 2026
The Texas A&M chapter of the American Association of University Professors, along with student and alumni groups, held an in-person press conference Thursday, January 22, to speak out against recent attempts to censor over 200 undergraduate core courses. Notably, Dr. Martin Peterson, a philosophy professor at Texas A&M, was required to remove texts by Plato from his syllabus, while other educators’ courses have been outright cancelled. The university cancelled Dr. Leonard Bright’s Ethics in Public Policy course just a day after he voiced serious concerns over academic freedom in a local TV interview. Some decisions to cancel or revise courses at Texas A&M were announced after the first day of classes, complicating students’ plans for the semester ahead.
Texas AAUP-AFT Spring 2026 Statewide meeting on Saturday, Feb. 28th, 8:30am-1pm, in San Antonio. Topics include institutional censorship, campus free speech, AI policies, dual-credit policies, responding to targeted faculty harassment, institutional accreditation, and Texas AFT Committee on Political Education (PAC). In-person attendance is restricted to Texas AAUP-AFT members and guests. Great for networking and professional development. Here’s the recap of the Fall 2025 Texas AAUP-AFT Statewide Meeting for reference. All AAUP members are welcome to attend: please RSVP to the following email: info+texas-aft-higher-education-info@email.actionnetwork.org
